The characters encountered some fast-paced events, and one had to do with a river this wild-looking.
INT. THE STAR HOTEL
The people are in chaos and DRUNK GUY is still sitting on his chair with scratches on his face. He grew so mad, he looked up at the ceiling, and begins to glow purple light through cracks that were forming on him, looking ready to explode.
EXT. THE STAR HOTEL – NIGHT The trio run away from the hotel, DEXTER at the front, while the teens follow him. TRISTAN, who is a few blocks away from the inn, looks back and stops to see it burst into flames.
DEXTER looks back at him to yells to get his attention
Come on, they’ll be after us soon enough!
The trio resume running through the city the exit gates, going past the guards. NEW GUARD (29), a stern-looking lady turns to the PARTNER (19), a shy teen volunteer, to talk to him.
I knew some will regret ever coming to Davine-Argent.
INT. CHANTING FOREST – NIGHT
The trio stops running and collapse to the ground. Then TRISTAN sits up, being aware of his surroundings.
Where are we?
ABIGAIL (exhausted from running to care)
I don’t wanna know. As long as no one is trying to kill us, we’re cool.
DEXTER (panting yet able to reply)
DEXTER (shaking his head)
No, Chanting Forest. This was found, and first navigated by a man named Frederick Chanting, thus this forest is named after him.
How did he find it?
He stumbled upon it after running away from a bar. And at the next day, he and a few men charted the place, and begged that the forest may not be cut down to preserve its beauty.
TRISTAN (looking at the branch in the vase)
ABIGAIL and DEXTER turn to see a leaf wilt snap itself off the branch. The leaf floated down to the ground. TRISTAN looked at them, scared.
A day has passed.
ABIGAIL looks stunned, remembering TRISTAN won’t live for long.
Suddenly, TRISTAN winces, as a headache overcomes him. ABIGAIL and DEXTER look at him worriedly.
Tristan, are you okay?
TRISTAN stops wincing in pain, as the headache leaves as sudden as it came. Then, he reassures them.
I’m fine, but we have to hurry. We only got 14 Hoventian days here, and we still haven’t found an ingredient for the Amity Potion.
INT. TRISTAN’S BEDROOM-PRESENT DAY
TRISTAN is narrating.
I did not know where these headaches came from. But, they’ll be a constant annoyance throughout this entire journey.
Time is of an essence, but we need to rest. We’ll be better finding something fully awake.
TRISTAN hugs his knees, nervous.
Will the Amity Potion really work?
Tristan, your grandmother wouldn’t send us here if she knew it won’t work.
TRISTAN looks at the tattoo on his arm, 8/21/2017, still stressed about his coming death.
So little time.
INT. TRISTAN’S BEDROOM – PRESENT DAY
ABIGAIL stops narrating for a while when the door opens and TRISTAN and DEXTER comes in.
Is everything okay?
Cool. So far, only 1,000 people are watching this. And the people are from Hoventia. (in mumbles) At least that’s I think.
DEXTER (sprinting to the chair where ABIGAIL is sitting)
Now, is it my turn to speak?
ABIGAIL (getting off the chair)
DEXTER (leaping into the seat, and looking down)
‘Course, though why is this seat so warm?
Because we did a lot of sitting.
DEXTER (looking at the cam)
Brill. Now where were you at?
INT. CHANTING FOREST -NIGHT
DEXTER looks around, watching the two teens rest, having had volunteered to watch for the night. The bottle is put in the pocket of one of the bags.
DEXTER (murmuring to himself)
Look at them, sleeping as soundly as babies.
DEXTER then heard a sword being sheathed from far away, and looked around, darting this way and that, looking to who made the sound.
DEXTER (sounding calm yet panicking)
Who’s there? Who’s in these woods?
He then heard a whoosh of someone speeding through something. He looked up, sniffed a bit, and still talked to whoever was there, defending the teens.
You know, I heard this quote that came from an American author. He said,” It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” Which is true, for a lot of people, and me because I am related to them.
DEXTER then gives up, turns around to see a figure with a knife, looking like it was about to stab one of the sleeping teens. He then lunges at the figure to save them.
DEXTER (as he lunges at the killer-to-be)
GET AWAY FROM MY PEOPLE!!!
TRISTAN and ABIGAIL suddenly wake up from DEXTER’S screaming. TRISTAN gets his bag and they found him yelling at something…or someone. TRISTAN and ABIGAIL look and see MARGO (13) a thin, crazy girl, screaming as DEXTER growled at her.
CALL OFF YOUR DOG!!! I’LL DIE! I’LL DIE! PLEASE LEAVE ME ALONE!
TRISTAN (a little shaken)
Dexter, get off.
Not gonna happen. She held a dagger in her hand, and looked ready to kill you!
MARGO (insanely screaming)
THE WITCHES ARE COMING!! THE WITCHES WANT THE CURSED BOY!!
ABIGAIL pushed TRISTAN and DEXTER and looked at MARGO’S wide scared eyes. TRISTAN realizes that MARGO was talking about him. ABIGAIL calmly spoke to her, wanting to know more.
ABIGAIL (narrowing her eyes at MARGO)
What do you know about Tristan?
MARGO (lowering her voice to a croak)
The cursed boy had been wrong since birth, and he was destined to destroy the Beautiful. At least that’s what the Beautiful said in my dreams. She is wise, along with being beautiful.
MARGO then smiles with an evil glint in her eyes.
She has long wavy hair, as dark as the night, with glittering stars woven into them. Her skin is flawless, covered with quotes in cursive, with a thin figure in a beautiful flowing dress. She told me things that I never thought about. How my parents aren’t real and were plotting to ruin me; how my friends are weakening and belittling me; that people themselves are all selfish and cruel, which renders them completely clueless; humans can go without company- they just are too scared to do it; and if I, Margo, kill him, the cursed boy, then the Beautiful will be my mentor. She’ll teach me things I have been blinded from for so long.
MARGO threw her head back, laughing quietly, and ABIGAIL realized something dark.
ABIGAIL (getting scared)
You’re under her spell.
MARGO (with her eyes glowing brilliant violet)
Oh, Abigail Evening Landers, as your given name, there are so many things you’ve blinded yourself from. From the truth.
Abigail, leave her alone. She’s crazy.
MARGO (sinking in their fear of her)
Oh, you won’t leave me alone.
INT. TRISTAN’S BEDROOM – PRESENT DAY
DEXTER continues to narrate the story.
I’m just gonna say. Though hopelessly, practically delusional, Margo is practically all bark and no bite compared to the rest.
INT. CHANTING FOREST – DAWN
MARGO (looking up and raising her arms to the sky)
BRING OUT THE GIANTS!!!!!
Behind them, rock giants rose from the ground, armed with obsidian clubs, much to MARGO’S amazement, and to the trio’s fears.
MARGO ( her arms still up, and smiling brightly as the giants looked at her)
Behold, the cursed boy and his tramp.
ABIGAIL & DEXTER & TRISTAN (simultaneously insulted)
INT. TRISTAN’S BEDROOM – PRESENT DAY
ABIGAIL is sitting next to DEXTER right now.
Of course, I had no idea who that psycho meant. The name ‘tramp’ had been used on stray dogs in Hoventia. So who knows?
I’m just gonna assume she’s talking about me. Either way, that was pretty insulting.
INT. CHANTING FOREST – DAY
The rock giants try to smash the three with their clubs, as the trio are running for their lives. MARGO is yelling to them dark encouragement at the giants, making things worse.
GET ‘EM GIANTS! CRUSH THEIR BONES WITH THE STRENGTH GIVEN TO YOU BY THE BEAUTIFUL!!!!
How do we get out?!!!
ABIGAIL (equally scared)
ABIGAIL slips on slippery mud and looks ready to fall into a fast-moving river, but TRISTAN and DEXTER grab her, yet they both slip and fall luckily to the wet sand near the river. His bag falls beside them. When they get up, covered in sand and mud, they are surrounded by the rock giants all there on the shore of the river. ABIGAIL looks at the other side, which seemed a mile away. ROCK GIANT (adult male), a simple human form made from large stones, challenges them, letting them choose which death they would prefer.
So, which fate do you rather have? Swim, or be crushed.
The CROWD OF GIANTS are so in for the latter.
CROWD OF GIANTS
They say this repeatedly, pumping their fists up every time the word was spoken.
ABIGAIL (still looking at the other side of the river)
We could swim. I don’t mind the current.
DEXTER (scared, and knowing better)
Forget it. Even the best swimmers have attempted to go across. Even sailors, construction workers, runaways, criminals, soldiers, and mothers who are trying to save their children. And you now what happens? They all drown! We are looking at what the Hoventians call, The River of Ghosts!
TRISTAN(looking at DEXTER)
Well, it’s not like being crushed by giants suddenly sound like a lesser poison!
ABIGAIL (shutting her eyes, scared)
ABIGAIL’s voice echoes and sound waves are shown expanding as everything around the trio freezes. The giants stop moving. The river becomes calm and serene. A path of flat stones to the other side reveal themselves. The teens get their satchels, and the trio looks in awe.
DEXTER (staring at ABIGAIL and the background)
Cor blimey, how did you…?
ABIGAIL (looking at her hands)
I have no idea.
TRISTAN stares at the path in the river.
Should we cross?
Well, since nothing’s happening…yeah.
The trio started walking down the path with their arms outstretched and looking down to keep balance, and in case the river started running again. TRISTAN looks up and puts his arms down, realizing nothing’s gonna happen, and stops and sees LILY (7) an cute, enigmatic barefoot little girl wearing a simple sleeveless nightgown that reaches to her knees. She’s smiling and and holding a few sprigs of rosemary tightly in her hand. ABIGAIL and DEXTER take a look at LILY behind TRISTAN.
INT. TRISTAN’S BEDROOM-PRESENT DAY
TRISTAN is now narrating his story.
TRISTAN (looking down)
I wondered why that girl was there, and how she got there without my noticing. I only hoped she isn’t as crazy as Margo. What happened became one of the most haunting experiences in my entire life.
INT. THE RIVER – DAY
Smiling LILY points at them and begins laughing, turns around, and runs across the river, dropping her flowers into the river. She looked close to jumping to the river to getting them. TRISTAN runs after her, wanting to save her.
Hey! Don’t jump in there! Come back!
ABIGAIL and DEXTER run after him, to hold him back wondering why is he chasing after LILY.
DEXTER (knowing better and scared to death)
Tristan! She’s gonna jump anyway! Stop!
TRISTAN (still running, ignoring DEXTER)
Stop! Please, I’m asking you to stop-!
The voice of SAD LADY (twenties) a crying woman who’s after LILY as well, echoes across the river.
SAD LADY (V.O)
Lily! Please don’t!
LILY and TRISTAN finally stop running, and they look at SAD LADY who was at the other side that is a few feet away, crying uncontrollably, reaching out to LILY as if LILY was drowning in a river.
SAD LADY (on her knees, her hands reaching out to LILY, desperately scared)
Lily, come to me. The river won’t be still for long. COME HERE!
LILY turns away from SAD LADY to TRISTAN, who is now looking at her. ABIGAIL and DEXTER are already close to him, and now wanting TRISTAN to snap out of it and hurry.
ABIGAIL (seeing something scary and warning TRISTAN)
TRISTAN!! Behind you!
TRISTAN looks back and sees that the side of the river they left began being wild again, toppling one flat stone after the other, inching closer to TRISTAN and LILY. GIANTS slowly begin to move again. ABIGAIL and DEXTER run to the other side. TRISTAN looks at LILY and tries to convince to go to the other side.
TRISTAN (breathing quickly and desperate)
Go on, Lily. Join her, she’s gonna take very good care-
LILY, who’s crying, shakes her head, and gives him the few flowers she didn’t drop yet. The river continues to get closer, now six stones away.
LILY (voice cracking, yet very serious for a seven-year-old)
She won’t, okay. I’d rather drown.
Tristan! Get out of there!
Go, you bloody idiot!
TRISTAN (shaking his head and not believing LILY)
No, don’t think that. You’re only a kid-
LILY looks briefly at the river, which is now two stones away then back at TRISTAN. She stopped crying.
LILY (crazily calm)
LILY falls backward as the river is back to being fully merciless again, and TRISTAN begins to fall, trying to save LILY while he still could.
TRISTAN (as he’s falling)
TRISTAN is held on tightly by the shirt by DEXTER, and flung to the other side. The SAD LADY and LILY had vanished. DEXTER, who’s now furious, scolds TRISTAN for his actions.
God, what were you thinking, you idiot! That you were gonna save her?!
TRISTAN (shouting in shock)
That girl was gonna drown, and I didn’t want her to-
DEXTER (interrupting, so he can get the reason why he’s so upset)
TRISTAN! I don’t know why it’s so clear on me and Abigail, and not on you…the girl and the sobbing lady…they’re bloody ghosts! They’re already DEAD!!
TRISTAN’s face became completely shocked. All the color has drained from his face. ABIGAIL goes closer to ABIGAIL, and notices the flowers spread around when TRISTAN was flung.
Is that what the little girl gave you?
TRISTAN (nodding and looking ready to faint)
Uh-huh. Before she di-disappeared.
Once again, the headache comes back, and TRISTAN puts his hand on his forehead. But, the headache is like a hit-and-run, so it’s gone almost instantly after it came.
DEXTER (looking at the flowers in awe)
Those flowers aren’t just any flowers. They’re Pueri-Risum–Child’s Laugh!
TRISTAN(confused and picking them up)
Why are they called that?
They are called that because when they were first brought to Hoventia, according to legend, a child laughed crazily with his friends while the one who discovered it, a lady named Hazel, tried to come up with a name for it. Since the laugh was so endearing to her, she gave it the name, Pueri-Risum. Child’s Laugh. In the world you come from, they are known as Rosemary.
ABIGAIL (shocked, and she pronounces the h in herb)
Aren’t they the herb in teas that help people remember more?
TRISTAN (correcting her calmly)
Yeah. Sometimes Marie-Grace makes tea with those herb. The “H” is silent, Abigail.
The English language is cruel sometimes to letters.
TRISTAN (changing the subject)
So how many leaves are required?
Three. But keep the whole plant, so the leaves won’t go anywhere.
The trio heard a raging roar, and saw the CROWD OF GIANTS yelling at them, shouting out for vengeance.
CROWD OF GIANTS (angry and bitter)
CURSE THEM!! CURSE THEIR JOURNEY FURTHER!! LET THEM BE CRUSHED BY THE SORCERESS!!! YOU BETTER NOT COME BACK, OR YOU WILL BE CRUSHED!!!
TRISTAN (standing up)
We gotta go!
The trio get their stuff and jog into the rest of the forest, with their first ingredient.
